School Governance

Charlotte Community School for Girls is governed by 3 entities: the Board of Directors which is responsible for legal and financial matters; the Board of Teachers which is responsible for pedagogical matters; and the Administration which is responsible for the day-to-day school matters. We receive tremendous advice from our Board of Advisors.

CCSG Board of Teachers

Cathy Sheafor, Head of School

Cathy is passionate about children, education, the environment, technology and issues of justice and fairness. She is a retired attorney who practiced law for the Department of Justice, focusing on environmental and civil rights issues. While at the Department, she served as the Director of Environmental Justice and Assistant Assistant Attorney General before taking a position at the Private Adjudication Center at Duke University. She is an experienced mediator and teacher and taught courses at both Duke University and Meredith College. She has participated in the Big Brother/Big Sister program, tutored in many public and private schools, served on the PTA, volunteered with the Special Olympics, coached academic teams, and coached youth soccer and swimming. She homeschooled her two daughters when they were in middle school. Cathy graduated cum laude from Duke University in 1988. In 1992, she received her JD from Washington University School of Law where she graduated Order of the Coif and served on Law Review.

We have many generous volunteers who teach courses as well. Volunteers serving more than 4 hours a week include: Kerri Doyle, Judi Howe, Kennesia Martin and Rosemary Klein.

Natalie Alston, Co-Chair

Natalie is a second year associate in the bankruptcy and restructing group at Moore and Van Allen. She attended Independence High School before matriculating at NC State as a Caldwell Fellow. After graduating summa cum laude from NC State in 2004, Natalie attended Harvard Law School where she co-chaired the Black Law Student Association. Natalie comes to the Board with a passion for empowering girls and a wealth of experience in fundraising.

Tiffany Capers

Tiffany is currently the Vice President of Scholarships at Foundation for the Carolinas. Prior to joining the foundation in 2007, she worked as the Small Business Program Director for the City of Charlotte. Tiffany is passionate about education and she is interested in helping young girls find the light that is within them and helping them cultivate the fortitude not to let anyone put it out.

Bruce Taylor
Dr. Bruce Taylor is an Assistant Professor at UNC-C and the Director for Adolescent Literacies at UNC Charlotte. Dr. Taylor's research and teaching focus on the social and cultural aspects of literacy and learning of adolescents and, in particular, ways to meet the academic learning needs of diverse and often marginalized students.

Judi Howe

Judi is a retired entrepreneur and educator. Prior to retirement, Judi was a partner in a Coldwell Banker Real Estate company where she served as General Manager, overseeing the work of four sales offices, a commercial company, a new homes company, and a concierge service. When she retired, she committed to make a difference in the lives of those children who might not be enjoying the benefits of books at home. As a result, she volunteers in a local subsidized daycare center. She also writes children's picture books.

Kris Allsbury

Kris Allsbury served as the Associate Director for a statewide community college biotechnology initiative that was a workforce development project serving as an economic development catalyst for NC. She oversaw curricula development, management of grants, and support for system biotechnology economic development efforts. With over thirty years of extensive technical experience in the corporate, academic, and public sectors, she has done private consulting in staff development, training, and web design.

CCSG Board of Advisors

Having an independent body of community leaders, parents, and other interested community members can be key to building a secure, ongoing program. Each Advisory Board member brings something unique to the program. Some members will take responsibility for specific tasks at the direction of the Board of Directors. Other members will not be able to accept specific responsibilities, but will attend meetings and provide valuable input. Others may not be able to attend many meetings, but have good contacts or can carry out a specific function independently.
